Astemizole and Chlorpheniramine_The difference between Astemizole and Chlorpheniramine

Many drugs have the same effect, so people have multiple options when treating diseases. When doctors prescribe medicine to treat diseases, they will choose medicines with better therapeutic effects based on the patient's physical condition, because some medicines may have an impact on the patient's body or other medicines he or she is taking. Let’s learn about the differences between Astemizole and Chlorpheniramine.

1. Which is better, Astemizole or Chlorpheniramine?

Astemizole is a potent and long-acting histamine H1 receptor antagonist without central sedation and anticholeretic effects. Because of its long-lasting effect, a single daily application can control allergy symptoms for 24 hours. Receptor binding studies have shown that this product can provide complete peripheral H1 receptor binding rate at pharmacological doses. Since it does not pass the blood-brain barrier, it has no effect on central H1 receptors. Used to treat perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, chronic urticaria and other symptoms and signs of allergic reactions.

The main therapeutic ingredient of chlorpheniramine is chlorpheniramine maleate, which is a first-generation antihistamine. Chlorpheniramine is one of the strongest antihistamines. Its sedative effect is weaker than that of promethazine, and it also has certain anticholine effects. Suitable for skin allergies: urticaria, eczema, dermatitis, drug rash, pruritus, neurodermatitis, insect bites, solar dermatitis, and can also be used for allergic rhinitis, drug and food allergies. The main adverse reactions are drowsiness, thirst, polyuria, sore throat, sleepiness, weakness, palpitations, skin ecchymosis, and bleeding tendency. Therefore, chlorpheniramine is very effective in treating allergic rhinitis.

It can be seen from this that chlorpheniramine and astemizole have certain similarities in their efficacy, and both have obvious therapeutic effects on diseases such as allergies, but the effect of chlorpheniramine is slightly better.
