Can inflammation cause bone destruction?

Bone health often affects people's daily life and actions. As they age, many people face problems such as osteoporosis and bone damage. If not treated in time, they may even face the risk of paralysis. Inflammation is usually caused by bacterial infection in the body. So, when the bones are infected by bacteria and inflammation occurs, will it also cause bone damage?

1. Bone destruction refers to the loss of bone tissue caused by local bone being replaced by pathological tissue. It is caused by the pathological tissue itself directly dissolving and absorbing the bone tissue, or by the pathological tissue causing the production and hyperactivity of osteoclasts. Both cortical and cancellous bone can be destroyed.

2. Bone destruction refers to the loss of bone tissue caused by the replacement of bone by pathological tissue. It is caused by the pathological tissue itself directly dissolving and absorbing the bone tissue, or by the pathological tissue causing the production and hyperactivity of osteoclasts. Both cortical and cancellous bone can be destroyed.

3. CT manifestations of osteolytic destruction: single or multiple bone dissolutions within the vertebral body, presenting as round or quasi-circular low-density areas, some are cave-like or honeycomb-like, mostly without sclerotic edges, with dead bone fragments visible inside, typically manifested as "nest egg-like"; it can penetrate the bone cortex to the surrounding area.

4. CT manifestations of bone fragment type destruction: The diseased vertebral body collapses and loses its integrity, becoming multiple bone fragments with different sizes, shapes and densities. The bone fragments can invade the epidural space of the spinal canal and the paravertebral tissue or be found in the vertebral appendages and rib destruction areas.

5. CT manifestations of subperiosteal destruction: The anterior edge of the vertebral body shows worm-eaten or rat-bitten bone destruction, which may extend upward and downward along the subperiosteum and anterior longitudinal ligament to involve adjacent vertebrae. Paravertebral abscesses are often more obvious.

6. CT manifestations of osteolytic edge sclerosis type: It manifests as localized osteolytic destruction in the anterior half of the vertebra, with irregular shape and obvious sclerotic edges. No dead bone is found, no obvious paravertebral abscess or only slight swelling of the paravertebral soft tissue.
