①Cause dermatitis

There are 20 species of poisonous pederus beetles that can cause dermatitis reported worldwide.

Only three species are known in China, namely the yellow-legged poisonous rove beetle (Paederus fuscipes Curtis), the black-legged poisonous rove beetle (P. tamulus Erichson) and the strange poisonous rove beetle (P. peregrinus Erichson). Among them, the black-legged poisonous rove beetle is also known as the tower poisonous rove beetle, and the yellow-legged poisonous rove beetle is also known as the spindle poisonous rove beetle. The cases of paederus dermatitis in Chongqing, Nanchong, Zhengzhou and Xiaogan, Hubei were all caused by the yellow-legged paederus. [6]

②Infection route

Poisonous pedere beetle dermatitis is caused by the toxins in the poisonous pedere beetle's body fluids coming into contact with human skin. During the season when pathogens occur (especially large outbreaks), the parasites enter the room through open doors and windows due to the attraction of lights at night, and crawl around people, often causing a strange feeling. People may intentionally or unintentionally slap, crush or rub the skin with their hands, causing venom to overflow and stick to the skin and hands. When the hands then touch the skin elsewhere, multiple parts of the skin may be damaged. The toxin of the poisonous rove beetle is a strong contact toxin that surpasses the venom of cobras. There are three types of toxins in the poisonous pedere beetle, namely pederin, pseudopederin and pederone.

The eggs, larvae, pupae and all parts of the adult beetle except the wings contain toxins. The toxins of adult worms mainly come from hemolymph, and the toxins in female worms are 10 times that in male worms. The toxin is distributed in every part of the insect's body, dividing the insect body into several segments. No matter which segment contacts the skin, it will cause dermatitis with the same symptoms. The amount of toxin contained in different parts of the insect body varies, with the abdomen containing the most, followed by the thorax and legs.

There are three ways that the body fluids of rove beetles can infect human skin: the first is when the body of the rove beetle is directly crushed on the skin, which is called direct infection; the second is when the body fragments contaminate the fingers, and then the fingers touch other parts of the body, causing infection, which is called indirect infection; the third is when the insects hide in clothes and face towels, and when they are used, the body of the insect is rubbed and the venom is stained on it, causing infection after contact with the skin. Regardless of the form of infection, there is a rubbing action, which is the root cause of the various shapes of dermatitis and the different sizes of damaged areas. Direct contact with insect body fluids is the main way of causing pedere beetle dermatitis.
