Can I drink water before doing B-ultrasound

There are many things people need to pay attention to when doing an examination. Because people nowadays pay great attention to their physical health, they have specific physical examinations every year. There are many items in the physical examination, and they can check whether there are any diseases in the human body. Then you should still pay attention to items that occurred before the examination, such as whether you need to drink water. Or whether you can drink water. B-ultrasound is a common examination for the human body, but some issues should be noted. Can you drink water before doing a B-ultrasound?

Can I eat before doing B-ultrasound?

Whether you can eat before having an ultrasound depends on the part that needs to be examined. If it is the abdomen, no, and you also need to fast for 8 hours before the examination. Because eating can cause changes in organs such as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, which will affect the accuracy of the test results. Some organs may even change position. For example, the spleen will shift backward and upward after a full meal, thus affecting the imaging, so it is best to have an empty stomach.

There is no requirement for fasting when doing B-ultrasound of certain organs, such as heart ultrasound. Routine gynecological B-ultrasound examinations do not require fasting.

In addition, pregnant women can also eat before doing B-ultrasound. Only when the baby is full will the baby stay in the belly more obediently and accept the doctor's examination with the mother.

Can I drink water before doing ultrasound?

Whether you can drink water before doing an ultrasound also needs to be determined based on the part being examined.

If you are having a liver and gallbladder ultrasound examination, you cannot eat within 8 hours and cannot drink water within 6 hours before the examination. Only in this way can the inspection results be more accurate. Because the gallbladder is emptied after eating or drinking, it is not conducive to observing the morphological characteristics of the gallbladder, which will affect the results of the gallbladder examination.

When examining organs such as the spleen, pancreas, and kidneys, drinking water before the examination has no effect. Sometimes, in order to get a better examination, you need to drink water and hold your urine before the examination. For example, when judging whether there are urinary stones, it is best to check after drinking water, which can be more accurate. This is because ureteral stones can block the flow of urine. After drinking water, the renal pelvis may become dilated, which is called hydronephrosis.

When doing routine gynecological examinations, it is also necessary to drink water to fill the bladder, and then use abdominal B-ultrasound to observe the situation in the pelvic cavity. If vaginal B-ultrasound is used, there is not much requirement for drinking water.

Do I need to hold my urine before doing an ultrasound?

When many people see women holding their urine during abdominal B-ultrasound, they mistakenly believe that all B-ultrasound examinations require holding urine. In fact, this is not the case. Generally, you need to hold your urine when doing B-ultrasound examinations of the urinary system, prostate, uterine appendages, etc. This is not necessary for other B-ultrasound examinations such as examinations of the liver, gallbladder and other internal organs.

This is because holding urine can fill the bladder and give an unprecedented sense of fullness, which can better show the morphology of the urinary system or organs to be examined, such as the prostate and uterine appendages, and help in the diagnosis of the disease. However, there is no need to hold urine when using a vaginal probe.

If you are doing other examinations, it has nothing to do with whether the bladder is full, so there is no need to hold your urine.
