Is hawthorn an antidote?

Hawthorn is generally not an antidote, but it is an important medicine for regulating qi, removing blood stasis, and promoting body fluid and quenching thirst. Traditional Chinese medicine is relatively complex and depends on the processing technology. Different processes will certainly produce different results. However, pregnant women and patients with peptic ulcers should not eat too much hawthorn, especially raw hawthorn, and it is not suitable to be eaten on an empty stomach.

Whether hawthorn can be an antidote depends on your illness and the medicine you are taking. If the doctor does not give any special instructions and you are more concerned about it, it is best to drink hawthorn water 2-3 hours after taking the medicine so that there will be no conflict.

Hawthorn tastes sour and becomes even more sour when heated. You should brush your teeth immediately after eating it, otherwise it will be bad for your dental health. People who are afraid of sour teeth can eat hawthorn products. Pregnant women should avoid eating hawthorn to avoid inducing miscarriage. People with weak spleen and stomach, low blood sugar and children should not eat hawthorn. Hawthorn cannot be eaten on an empty stomach. Hawthorn contains a large amount of organic acid, fruit acid, hawthorn acid, citric acid, etc. Eating it on an empty stomach will cause a sharp increase in stomach acid, causing adverse stimulation to the gastric mucosa, causing stomach bloating and heartburn. If eaten on an empty stomach, it will increase hunger and aggravate the original stomach pain. The tannic acid contained in raw hawthorn can easily form gastric stones when combined with stomach acid, which are difficult to digest. If the gastric stones cannot be digested for a long time, they will cause gastric ulcers, gastric bleeding and even gastric perforation. Therefore, you should try to eat less raw hawthorn, especially people with weak gastrointestinal function should be more cautious. Doctors suggest that it is best to cook hawthorn before eating.

The efficacy and function of hawthorn

1. Aid digestion. Hawthorn contains a variety of organic acids. After oral administration, it increases the acidity of gastric juice, improves the activity of pepsin, and promotes the digestion of protein. Hawthorn is sour and stimulates the gastric mucosa to promote the secretion of gastric juice. Hawthorn contains lipase, which can promote the digestion of fat. Hawthorn contains ingredients such as vitamin C, which can increase appetite when taken orally. Hawthorn has a regulating effect on gastrointestinal motility, an inhibitory effect on gastrointestinal smooth muscles in a spasmodic state, and an excitatory effect on smooth muscles in a relaxed state.

2. Lower blood lipids and resist atherosclerosis. Hawthorn flavonoids can significantly reduce the concentrations of serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (IDL-C) and apolipoprotein B (ApoB) in experimental hyperlipidemia animals, and significantly increase the concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and apolipoprotein A (ApoA), but have little effect on triglycerides (TG). Hawthorn's lipid-lowering effect is achieved by inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver and promoting the liver's uptake of plasma cholesterol. Hawthorn flavonoids can also reduce the risk of atherosclerosis (AS) and play a role in preventing the occurrence and development of AS.

3. Strengthen the heart. Hawthorn has the effect of enhancing myocardial contractility and increasing cardiac output. Hawthorn extract can enhance the myocardial contractility of toad hearts in vivo and in vitro, and the effect lasts for a long time. The active ingredients currently identified are 3',4',5,7-tetrahydroxyflavone-7-glucoside and rutin.
