What are the symptoms of rabies in humans?

Prodromal stage

Headache, low fever, loss of appetite, fatigue, irritability, fear and anxiety, sensitivity to sound, light, wind and other stimuli and a feeling of suffocation. Abnormal sensation around the healed wound, such as itching, tingling, numbness, and a sense of ants.

Excitement

Extreme fear, fear of water, wind, sound, and light. Especially extreme fear of water, even hearing the sound of water will cause the whole body to twitch, so rabies is also called hydrophobia. This is because the patient's sympathetic nerves are hyperactive, the laryngeal muscles have spasmed, and hearing the sound of water will cause the patient to drink water reflexively, which will induce the whole body nerve excitement.

Muscle tension. This phase also manifests as increased heart rate, profuse sweating, a large amount of saliva secretion that cannot be swallowed and flows out from the corners of the mouth, spasms in the throat and tongue muscles causing painful groans, sometimes like the groans of a dog, and pain and spasms in the fingers causing random slapping and scratching, so it is said that rabies patients are like dogs.

Paralysis

Physical strength is exhausted, convulsions stop, and the whole body becomes limp. Eventually, death occurs due to respiratory muscle paralysis and circulatory failure.

How to prevent rabies

1. Cut off the transmission route: It is important to prevent bites from cats and dogs, and educate children not to tease them. The contaminants, secretions and residences of rabies patients should be thoroughly disinfected.

2. Manage the source of infection: Try not to keep animals such as cats and dogs at home. If you do keep them, you should always keep them clean. Strictly manage domestic dogs and eliminate stray dogs. If you suspect a rabid dog or cat, kill it immediately. Do not skin it or eat it. Instead, burn it or bury it deep.

3. Protect susceptible groups: Patients who are bitten should be given injections and correct treatment in a timely manner.

4. Vaccination can prevent the occurrence of rabies. Dogs, cats and other pets should be given veterinary rabies vaccines according to regulations.

5. Immediate preventive injection: Inject 2 ml of rabies vaccine (primary hamster kidney cell culture vaccine) intramuscularly on the day of being bitten by a cat, dog or other animal, and on the following 3, 7, 14 and 30 days. In severe cases, inject 3 ml intramuscularly each time and daily.

First aid measures for rabies

1. After being bitten by a sick dog, the wound should be rinsed immediately. The key is the method of washing. If the wound is small and superficial and there is no active bleeding, you can rinse the wound directly with tap water or soapy water for at least 30 minutes to rinse away any viruses that may have entered the wound. After rinsing, cover the wound with clean gauze. For serious bites, go to the hospital immediately for treatment.

2. After being bitten by a mad dog, even the smallest wound may cause infection with rabies and tetanus, and the wound may easily fester. Patients should receive rabies vaccination and/or tetanus antitoxin injection as required.

3. Being bitten by a sick dog is very dangerous. People often develop tetanus and die after being bitten by a sick dog or a dog owner.

4. Warm-blooded animals, including humans, have various bacteria and viruses living on their teeth. Dog bite wounds are deep and complex in shape, which are just right for bacterial reproduction. This is also the reason why diseases such as tetanus occur.
