How high does blood sugar need to be to require insulin?

Generally, different medicines will be prescribed according to the patient's physical condition. Only the one that suits you is the best. If oral hypoglycemic drugs cannot control the condition, insulin injections are needed.

Type 1 diabetes takes insulin first to maintain life

Type 1 diabetes: Formerly called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. It accounts for 5-10% of diabetes patients in my country. Type 1 diabetes occurs most often in children and adolescents, but it can occur at any age. The patient's onset is relatively rapid, and there is an absolute lack of insulin in the body, which makes ketoacidosis prone to occur. Insulin treatment is necessary to achieve satisfactory results, otherwise it will be life-threatening.

Type 2 diabetes often does not require insulin therapy to survive

Most patients with type 2 diabetes will not develop life-threatening ketoacidosis so quickly even if they do not take insulin, so type 2 diabetes was originally called non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Patients with type 2 diabetes sometimes also need to use insulin treatment, but most of the time it is because blood sugar control is not ideal, or because of acute complications, or serious chronic complications, rather than for the purpose of maintaining life like patients with type 1 diabetes.

Insulin for other conditions

Patients with more severe acute complications of diabetes:

Such as diabetes with infection, tuberculosis, ketoacidosis, hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state, as well as internal medicine, gynecology and pediatric emergencies, trauma, surgery, etc.

Those with more serious chronic complications of diabetes:

For example, in severe cases such as diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy, insulin injections are also necessary to prevent the deterioration of these complications and avoid tragedies such as blindness or uremia.

Patients with diabetic pregnancy or gestational diabetes:

It is generally recommended that diabetic patients should start injecting insulin when they are preparing to become pregnant so that their diabetes can be best controlled and they can finally give birth to a healthy child safely.
