Causes of sudden pain in ankle joints

There are always many unexpected things in life. Among them, due to one's own carelessness, it will cause pain in the ankle joints. In severe cases, there is not only pain in the ankle but also swelling. So, when faced with sudden pain in the ankle joint, do you know how to treat it? Experts tell us that before treatment, we must first know what causes ankle pain.

Causes of Ankle Pain

Ankle pain can have a great impact on our lives, so what exactly is the cause of ankle pain? Everyone should know that ankle pain is one of the common outpatient diseases. The following are the causes of ankle pain found by experts.

1. Chronic instability caused by severe ankle sprain

Ankle sprain is one of the most common orthopedic emergencies. Among sports injuries, 40% are ankle sprains, and in basketball, the figure reaches 52%. Doctors generally don’t take a sprained ankle seriously. They just use some Voltalen or spray some medicine and let the patient go home. In fact, more severe ligament injuries are much more serious than fractures. The movement of joints is maintained by ligaments. If the ligaments next to the joints are broken, the movement of the joints will become unstable.

If an ankle sprain is not treated well, it will leave long-term instability and swelling of the ankle. Long-term joint instability will wear out the cartilage on the surface of the joint, and cartilage cannot be regenerated. When cartilage is damaged, pain begins to occur and inflammation of the joints occurs. Gradually worsens, resulting in joint deformities. The deformity, in turn, can exacerbate joint damage.

2. Talus osteochondral fracture

Severe talus fractures and calcaneal fractures can easily leave disability. The cause of this pain is synovitis, which is caused by cartilage damage. A talus fracture with the main symptoms of local swelling, pain, subcutaneous ecchymosis, and inability to stand and walk.

3. Rheumatoid arthritis

Ankle joint pain is closely related to rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis causes poor blood circulation, which can lead to the inability of muscles or tissues to receive nutrients through blood circulation. This causes the muscles to lack nutrition and accelerate aging, becoming stiff and causing ankle pain. Rheumatoid arthritis is equivalent to bone arthritis in traditional Chinese medicine, and is generally treated with traditional Chinese medicine that can promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, dispel wind and relieve pain, and eliminate wind and arthritis.

5. Osteoarthritis

The joints are inflexible and stiff, and cannot be moved immediately after waking up in the morning or resting. The pain needs to be relieved by activities for a certain period of time. In severe cases, joint swelling, muscle atrophy, etc. may occur. Osteoarthritis is most likely to affect the distal and proximal interphalangeal joints of the hands, the knees, elbows, shoulders, and spinal joints, while the wrist and ankle joints are less likely to be affected.

6. Gouty arthritis

It is a systemic disease caused by abnormal uric acid metabolism, mainly manifested by increased blood uric acid and recurrent arthritis, about 75% of which occur in the joints of the big toes and the rest in the knee joints. Deposition of urate in the joints, kidneys, or other tissues causes damage to these organs and the formation of tophi.

Ankle pain treatment

1. Rest

You need to stop exercising immediately, take proper rest, and do not put weight on the injured joints.

2. Cold compress

Ice or other cold compresses can help reduce pain and swelling because lower temperatures reduce blood circulation. Apply cold compresses for 15 to 20 minutes three to four times a day.
