Increased serum alanine aminotransferase

Increased serum alanine aminotransferase

Alanine aminotransferase is usually used to diagnose liver function diseases. If there is a problem with the liver, or if the liver is irritated due to frequent drinking or overeating, the alanine aminotransferase level will be high. It is necessary to determine the cause of the high alanine aminotransferase. It is recommended to undergo relevant examinations and take appropriate treatment after the doctor's judgment. You can refer to the following content.

1. Causes:

There are many reasons for elevated ALT levels.

Significant increase is mainly seen in acute viral hepatitis, moderate increase is seen in chronic hepatitis, active cirrhosis, liver cancer, liver abscess, taking medications (especially those that are harmful to the liver), etc.

Mild increases can also be seen in myocardial infarction, myocarditis, heart failure; long-term drinking or drinking large doses at one time, as well as heart failure, fever and other symptoms in certain biliary diseases and heart diseases.

In addition, normal pregnancy, preeclampsia, acute fatty liver of pregnancy, etc. are also common causes of elevated transaminase.

2. Clinical manifestations

The clinical manifestations of high alanine aminotransferase levels include insomnia, fatigue, poor appetite, low-grade fever, aversion to greasy food, jaundice, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and discomfort in the liver area. Mild symptoms include sweating, drowsiness, thirst, and eye fatigue when reading.

Damage to the patient's liver causes continuous damage to liver cells. At the same time, high alanine aminotransferase levels reduce the liver's metabolic and detoxification abilities, resulting in drug metabolism and body toxins not being excreted in a timely manner, further increasing the burden on the liver.

3. Treatment principles

If the increase of transaminase is caused by physiological factors, you need to stay away from these factors in your life. If the elevation of transaminase is clearly caused by pathological factors, the cause must be identified and symptomatic treatment must be given accordingly.

The treatment of high transaminase levels must also follow certain principles. If the high transaminase levels are caused by viral hepatitis, antiviral treatment is required while protecting the liver and lowering enzymes.
