Can thrush cause a high fever?

Thrush is a common oral disease in children and infants. The cause of this disease is that infants do not pay attention to oral hygiene, eat randomly, bite quilts and mattresses with their mouths, and mothers do not pay attention to the hygiene of their nipples when feeding their children, which has a great impact. Thrush may also cause some other symptoms. So will thrush cause a high fever?

Can thrush cause a high fever?

Yes, thrush is caused by infection with Candida albicans, which is more common in infants and young children. It is manifested by the appearance of white curd-like substances on the oral mucosa, commonly on the tongue, gums, upper jaw, and cheeks. The general treatment is to clean the mouth with sodium bicarbonate solution and apply gentian violet solution topically. Vitamin B2 and C should also be increased in appropriate amounts.

Characteristics of thrush

Oral thrush can occur anywhere in the mouth, with the tongue, cheeks, soft tissues, and floor of the mouth being the most common sites. It starts with congestion and edema of the oral mucosa, often accompanied by a burning, stinging and dry feeling. After 1-2 days, white snowflake-like spots appear on the oral mucosa. It is slightly raised, much like curd or curd. Soon, these white spots gradually expand into patches of different shapes, and finally merge further to cover the entire tongue and the entire oral mucosa. This white film gradually turns yellowish brown and is tightly attached to the oral mucosa, making it difficult to wipe off. Babies often cry and are restless, refuse to feed, and may also have a low fever. In severe cases, the disease may spread to the throat, esophagus or respiratory tract, causing difficulty in swallowing or breathing.

Home Care for Oral Thrush

1. Topical application of nystatin is the most effective treatment. Nystatin kills mold directly, and thrush can be cured quickly. If there is no ready-made preparation, nystatin oral tablets can be crushed and added to water.

2. Gentian violet has the effect of inhibiting mold and can be used to treat thrush. The disadvantage is that it covers the original color of the oral mucosa. If there are other lesions in the mouth, such as ulcers, they will be covered and not easy to find.

3. If the child has a history of long-term use of antibiotics, the antibiotics should be stopped as soon as possible. This can support normal oral flora and inhibit fungal growth.

4. You can also use a cotton swab with saline to wash 3-4 times a day to clean your mouth.

5. Encourage the sick child to drink more water and give him liquid or semi-liquid food, such as milk, egg custard, cereal, noodles, etc.

Prevention of Oral Thrush

1. Pay attention to your child's oral hygiene and help him/her clean his/her mouth after feeding. If the child is young, you can use warm and wet gauze to clean his/her mouth. If the child is older, you can let the child rinse his/her mouth with water.

2. If the child is breastfed, the mother should wash her hands with clean water and clean the nipples with a warm, wet towel before feeding; if the child is fed with a bottle, the bottle and nipple should be boiled and sterilized in advance.

3. Do not use antibiotics indiscriminately. Because when children are given broad-spectrum antibiotics, the antibiotics may kill the bacteria that inhibit Candida albicans, causing the Candida albicans to multiply and cause thrush, which is medically called dysbiosis. When treating thrush in children, antibiotics should be discontinued. If antibiotics are necessary for a serious illness, they should be used under the guidance of a doctor.

4. Be cautious when giving medication to children and they should use the medication under the guidance of a doctor.
