What are the side effects of vitrectomy?

Vitreous surgery is actually the abbreviation of vitrectomy. It is a way to treat eye diseases. It has a good therapeutic effect on many kinds of eye diseases, such as glaucoma or cataracts. The vitreous is a gelatinous substance in the eye that helps see things in the outside world. However, if there is an eye disease, the vitreous will become necrotic and become turbid. At this time, the vitreous needs to be removed. However, many people may worry about whether there will be any sequelae after the Vitreous Surgery.

1. Vitreous hemorrhage:

It can be caused during and after surgery. For intraoperative bleeding, the perfusion bottle can be raised to increase the perfusion pressure, and underwater electrocoagulation can be used to stop bleeding. Photocoagulation of retinal lesions during and after surgery can prevent bleeding. Most postoperative bleeding can be absorbed by itself, and those who do not absorb after 3-6 months of observation can undergo another surgery.

2. Glaucoma:

It is a common complication after surgery. If it is caused by temporary trabecular edema or inflammation, it can be controlled by drugs. If it is ghost cell glaucoma, it should be treated with drugs first, and the anterior chamber can be washed for stubborn cases. Neovascular glaucoma may also occur after surgery, and drug treatment is generally ineffective. Filtration surgery or ciliary body cryosurgery can be tried.

3. Retinal tear or retinal detachment:

Poor lighting or unclear tissue distinction during surgery may occur when the cutting head directly attracts the retina or pulls the vitreous cords adhered to the retina. Therefore, a good microscope and contact lens must be used during surgery, the lighting must be sufficient, the cutting head must be sharp, and the cords must not be pulled. When cutting near the retina, the vitreous is turbid, so low suction and high cutting rate should be used. If retinal holes are found during surgery, intraocular laser is used for preventive photocoagulation. When retinal detachment occurs, intraocular laser or condensation sealing, vitreous gas injection, scleral external pressure, circumferential ligation, etc. can be used to treat it.

4. Postoperative precautions:

Avoid eating spicy and irritating foods to prevent surgical inflammation. Postoperative recuperation usually takes place in a prone position. Generally, you should pay attention to your body position. When resting on your stomach, you can use a special pillow for vitrectomy surgery or a Vitrectomy eye rest to help your eyes recover. At the same time, regular check-ups are required, and complications after surgery also depend on the patient's fundus condition.
