What are the symptoms of schistosomiasis liver disease

What are the symptoms of schistosomiasis liver disease

Schistosomiasis hepatitis is a liver disease caused by trematode infection, which often leads to cirrhosis of the liver and is extremely harmful to patients. Patients will go through chronic and late stages. In the chronic stage, the patient's liver will cause fatty degeneration, atrophic necrosis, and lead to liver dysfunction. In the late stage, it will cause liver fibrosis and even induce liver cancer.

1. Chronic stage

The main manifestation of the chronic stage is that the schistosomiasis eggs can cause changes in the patient's intestines and liver. The symptoms of schistosomiasis liver disease are mainly in the liver, but the eggs will spread along the small branches of the portal vein and arrange themselves around. Once the liver is affected by nutrition and blood supply, it will cause fatty degeneration, atrophy and necrosis, and symptoms of liver dysfunction. Patients often show leukopenia and fibrosis, which slowly develops into portal hypertension.

2. Late stage

As worm eggs continue to accumulate in the human liver, they will cause fibrosis around the portal vein trunk system, especially the second, third and fourth level branches. This is clinically known as mainline cirrhosis. The patient's liver surface will have map-like grooves, which appear uneven and have unclear boundaries. The places blocked by worm eggs will cause the proliferation of many small blood vessels, and these small blood vessels will be blocked due to the proliferation of endothelial cells, which will make fibrosis more serious.

The above are some of the more common symptoms of cirrhosis caused by schistosomiasis. Compared with other types of liver cirrhosis, schistosomiasis cirrhosis is more difficult to treat. Therefore, once a patient is diagnosed with schistosomiasis cirrhosis, he or she must rush to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible to prevent the patient's condition from becoming more serious and delaying the best time for treatment.
