Can Meige syndrome be cured?

The occurrence of Meige syndrome can cause a series of abnormal conditions in the body, such as facial spasms, muscle tension disorders, facial muscle imbalances, etc. The treatment of Meige syndrome needs to be done through reasonable methods, such as drug therapy, which contains various drugs, so patients need to be diagnosed before treatment.

Meige syndrome is a group of extrapyramidal disorders first described by French neurologist Henry Meige. The main manifestations are bilateral blepharospasm, oromandibular dystonia, and facial dystonia-like involuntary movements. Meige syndrome was first reported by Henry Meige in 1910 and has since been referred to as Brueghel syndrome, blepharospasm, oromandibular dystonia, and other names.

Drug treatment

1. A large number of literature reports that botulinum toxin (BTX) is effective for this disease , but its high price and side effects limit its use. Symptomatic dry eye is the most common, and other symptoms include dysphagia, ptosis, dyspnea, photophobia, diplopia, etc.

2. Oral medication

(1) Antipsychotic drugs

It has been observed that clozapine is effective for this condition. Its side effects include sedation and orthostatic hypotension, and it must be used with the assistance of a hematology monitor. Perphenazine (12 mg/d) and fluphenazine (12 mg/d) significantly reduced the frequency of blepharospasm. It has been documented that perphenazine and haloperidol can alleviate symptoms, but there are large individual differences.

(2) Cholesterol receptor blockers

The use of Antan (6 mg/d) can reduce the frequency of blepharospasm. Spontaneous Meige syndrome is effectively treated with high-dose anticholine drugs.

(3) Dopamine receptor blockers

Such as tetrabenazine, baclofen, etc.

(4) Antiepileptic drugs

Clonazepam is effective for this disease, and its effect is better than that of Antan. At the same time, the earlier the treatment, the better the effect.

(5) Others

Some people believe that changes in the function of melatonin may be effective for this disease based on its ability to regulate dopaminergic, choleretic, and γ2-amino acid effects. Dystonia is effective with anticholinergic drugs, a combination of a benzodiazepine and another drug (such as carbamazepine or fluoerlapine). At the same time, chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride, ceruletide, methioridazine, apomorphine, etc. are effective for this disease, and treatment should be started as early as possible. Long-term use of neuroleptics can lead to delayed dystonia and should therefore be used intermittently.
