As recorded in "Bielu", it can damage the lungs and should not be eaten too much. "Daily Materia Medica" also says that the juice will stay in the diaphragm and turn into phlegm, damaging the lung qi, so patients should avoid eating it. This may include people with chronic tracheitis, emphysema, silicosis, bronchial asthma and other weak asthma, who should avoid eating it.

It has been pointed out in Ben Jing Feng Yuan that water chestnuts should be avoided for people with cough caused by deficiency and fatigue, as they can severely deplete the lung qi. Therefore, people with weak lung qi, whether they have a cough or shortness of breath, should not eat too much.
