What's the matter with high total cholesterol and triglycerides

Total cholesterol and triglycerides are both blood lipids, and triglycerides are mainly used to provide calories. There are also many people who don’t know what is going on with high total cholesterol and triglycerides. Both of these high levels may be related to disease. For example, diabetes is a contributing factor to high triglycerides.

1. Obstructive jaundice

At this time, due to the obstruction of bile excretion, lipoprotein-X appears in the blood and the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver is hyperactive, with an increase in free cholesterol as the main feature. It causes high total cholesterol, so obstructive jaundice is one of the causes of high total cholesterol.

2. Liver cell damage

When cholesterol esterification is impaired, blood cholesterol decreases. In severe cases such as cirrhosis and severe hepatitis, total blood cholesterol also decreases.

3. Diabetes

According to the simplest classification method, it can be divided into insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). The pathogenesis of hypertriglyceridemia is different in different types of diabetes. In patients with uncontrolled IDDM and ketosis, severe insulin deficiency is often accompanied by significant hypertriglyceridemia. This is due to the inhibition of lipoprotein lipase activity, which causes CM to accumulate in plasma. Generally, the insulin level of NIDDM patients is higher than that of IDDM patients. The hyperinsulinemia of NIDDM patients often causes excessive secretion of endogenous insulin to compensate for the original insulin resistance. This severe hyperinsulinemia causes increased triglyceride levels due to its significantly weakened activation effect on lipoprotein lipase.

4. Kidney disease

Although the most common dyslipidemia associated with renal diseases such as nephrotic syndrome is hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia is also not uncommon. The mechanism of dyslipidemia in kidney disease is mainly due to the increased synthesis of VLDL and LDL, but some people also believe that it may be related to the slower metabolism of these lipoproteins.
