Can I eat breakfast while doing gastroscopy

Gastric disease is a relatively common disease nowadays. Because many people now have to face busy work and life every day, they do not have much time to prepare nutritious food for themselves. Not paying attention to healthy eating is also the biggest cause of gastrointestinal problems. Nowadays, gastroscopy is mostly used for stomach examinations. So, do you know what issues should be paid attention to during gastroscopy?

Do not eat breakfast during gastroscopy. Notes for gastroscopy: Before the examination:

(1) Do not smoke the day before the examination to avoid coughing that may affect intubation; not smoking can also reduce gastric acid secretion, making it easier for doctors to observe. (2) The patient must fast for at least 6 hours before the examination. If the examination is conducted in the morning, you should fast after dinner the day before and skip breakfast on that day. If the examination is conducted in the afternoon, you can eat light semi-liquid food for breakfast and fast at noon. Patients with severe illness or weak constitution may have difficulty supporting themselves after fasting, and hypertonic glucose solution should be injected intravenously before examination.

(3) In order to eliminate the patient's nervousness, reduce gastric juice secretion and gastric motility, expel the foam in the stomach, and make the image clearer, the doctor should give the patient sedatives, antispasmodics and defoaming agents 20-30 minutes before the examination if necessary. Patients should understand this and cooperate with it.

(4) In order to allow the gastroscope to pass smoothly through the pharynx, pharyngeal anesthetics are generally used before gastroscopy. Patients should follow the doctor's instructions for medication.

After inspection:

(1) Within half an hour after the gastroscopy, the pharyngeal anesthetic is still taking effect. Do not drink water or eat food during this period to avoid accidental entry of water into the trachea, causing choking or aspiration pneumonia.

(2) There may be pain or a foreign body sensation in the throat. Oral iodine lozenges, coral lozenges, etc. can be used to alleviate or eliminate the symptoms. (3) Patients who have undergone a biopsy (especially the elderly) should eat a semi-liquid diet within 1 to 2 days after the examination and avoid eating raw, cold, hard, and irritating foods. Do not smoke, drink alcohol, or drink strong tea or strong coffee to avoid inducing bleeding from the wound. Pay attention to whether there is black stool (tarry or asphalt-like, which is a sign of upper gastrointestinal bleeding). If black stool occurs, go to the hospital in time to ask a doctor to treat it.

After understanding the above content, it is recommended that every friend who undergoes gastroscopy must abide by the principles introduced above before doing the gastroscopy. This way, the results will be the most accurate. At the same time, no matter what kind of gastrointestinal disease problems arise, scientific examination and treatment should be paid attention to.
