Headache, swollen eyes, nausea

What causes headache, swollen eyes and nausea?

Headache is a very common phenomenon in daily life. There are many reasons for headache. Some people have simple headache, while others have headache accompanied by eye swelling and nausea. Generally speaking, if such symptoms occur in the body, you need to go to the hospital to find out the cause. However, before the cause is found out, it is best not to take medicine blindly, otherwise it will aggravate the condition and make treatment more difficult.

What causes headache, swollen eyes and nausea?

Headache, eye swelling and nausea may be caused by high blood pressure or high intraocular pressure, so timely examination is very important.

What happens if I have high intraocular pressure?

Intraocular pressure is the equalized pressure exerted by the contents of the eye on the walls of the eye.

1. Narrowing of the visual field and decreased vision

When the intraocular pressure is too high, the optic nerve will be damaged. In the early stage, vision loss and foggy vision often occur at night and disappear the next day.

2. Headache and eye swelling

Due to the sharp increase in intraocular pressure, the trigeminal nerve endings are stimulated, and patients often feel migraine and eye pain.

3. Nausea and vomiting

Increased intraocular pressure can reflexively cause excitement of the vagus nerve and vomiting nerve center, resulting in nausea and vomiting.

4. Rainbow Vision

Due to increased intraocular pressure, colored rings appear when looking at lights.

Posture and food factors

For a normal person, the intraocular pressure may rise by six mmHg when changing from a sitting position to a lying position. If you stand upside down, your intraocular pressure may rise by more than ten millimeters of mercury. Therefore, if glaucoma patients do yoga, we will advise them to avoid inverted movements as much as possible. In addition, drinking a large amount of fluid (such as 500CC) in a short period of time can increase intraocular pressure. Some medicines can also cause the side effect of increased intraocular pressure, the most noteworthy of which are medicines containing steroids. Regardless of the route of administration, whether oral, skin application, nasal spray or eye drops, as long as it contains steroids, there is a chance of this side effect.

Disease factors

Eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, iridocyclitis, cataracts, and myopia can all cause high intraocular pressure, and trauma can also cause high intraocular pressure.

Factors in daily life

Staying in the dark for too long; looking down or reading for too long; not getting enough rest and overworking; overeating; seasonal changes, such as winter.

1. Touch method is the simplest

The simplest method of self-testing intraocular pressure known now is probably the two-hand touch method. First, we close our eyes and keep our body relaxed, then press the eyeball with our hands. Be careful to touch it gently and feel the hardness of the eyeball. Compare it with the feeling of your lips, nose and forehead. You can easily determine whether the current intraocular pressure is normal. Generally, the feeling of touching the nose is similar to that of touching the nose.

2. The comparison method is more accurate

The comparison method should first give you a feel for your own normal intraocular pressure as a comparison for subsequent tests. To achieve this normal feeling, you should close your eyes, concentrate on the inner corner of your eye, and gently press the outer corner of your eye with your fingers. As the force increases to a certain level, you will see bright light. This force will be the comparison standard in the future. In the future, if the intensity of your self-tests changes when you use this method, then there should also be a difference in your intraocular pressure, and you should check it in time.

3. Self-test with simple instruments

There are some simple intraocular pressure measuring instruments on the market now, just like the blood pressure monitors and blood glucose meters we use. They can be operated simply by following the instructions, and the relevant data will be prompted, making it convenient for customers to self-test at home. They are much simpler than the large instruments in the hospital, and the measurement results are acceptable. There are also reports that by wearing contact lenses equipped with chips, you can easily do self-tests using your mobile phone, which would be even more convenient.

Self-test results may be different: Except for cases where eye pressure has actually changed, self-test results may also be different when the eyes are normal. If the measurement results are different, do not panic too much. If there is no discomfort in the eyes, you can consider whether it is related to the condition at the time of measurement. Intraocular pressure, like blood pressure, will be different before and after exercise, before and after sleep, and before and after mood changes. If you feel the difference is particularly large, you should seek medical treatment promptly.
