What to do if the vocal cords are damaged due to thyroid cancer

Thyroid cancer is a malignant tumor originating from the thyroid follicular epithelium or parafollicular cells. There are many reasons for vocal cord damage, including surgical factors, radiation factors, external factors, viral infection, etc. It is recommended to treat it in time through surgery and other methods.

1. Reasons:

1. Surgical factors: When thyroid cancer is treated surgically, the vocal cords may be damaged due to excessive removal of bilateral vocal cords, which may manifest as hoarseness.

2. Radioactive factors: After radioactive iodine treatment, patients with thyroid cancer may suffer from vocal cord damage due to radiation damage to the vocal cords. During neck radiotherapy, the vocal cord epithelium may also be damaged, resulting in vocal cord damage;

3. External factors: When patients with thyroid cancer undergo chemotherapy, the vocal cord epithelium may be damaged, resulting in vocal cord damage. Air pollution or occupational factors may cause patients to inhale a certain amount of harmful gases, which may also damage the vocal cord epithelium and cause vocal cord damage;

4. Viral infection: If the patient's immunity is low, when thyroid cancer patients are infected by viruses, the vocal cords may be damaged due to the viral invasion.

2. Treatment:

Surgery is the main method for curing thyroid cancer. If the patient has no contraindications to surgery, surgical resection should be performed as soon as possible. Based on the pathological results, decide whether thyroid hormone suppression therapy is needed. For patients with advanced thyroid cancer, chemotherapy with drugs such as paclitaxel injection and vincristine sulfate injection can be selected according to the patient's specific situation. If the patient has symptoms such as dyspnea, supportive treatments such as endotracheal intubation and ventilator-assisted ventilation are required.

It is recommended that patients with thyroid cancer maintain a light diet and avoid spicy foods to prevent irritation of the vocal cords and aggravation of the condition. In addition, patients should maintain a good attitude and actively receive treatment under the guidance of a doctor.
