What blood type can be transfused with type O blood?

What blood type can be transfused with type O blood?

As we all know, there are several types of human blood types. The most common ones include type A, type B, type AB and type O. There is also Rh negative blood, etc. Many people desire to have type O blood because it has many advantages over other blood types. In folk culture, many people call people with type O blood universal blood donors, that is, people with type O blood can donate blood to people with any blood type, but in fact, this statement is wrong. Even if you have type O blood, you cannot donate blood to anyone with other blood types.

What blood type can be transfused with type O blood?

Only people with blood type O can donate to people with blood type O

People with blood type O can donate blood to people with blood types A, B, and AB, and are called "universal blood donors."

But people with blood type O can only receive blood of blood type O.

In the past, O-type blood was called the universal blood type, but in fact it is not absolutely true. Nowadays, most blood transfusions are component transfusions. People with type O blood can receive plasma from any ABO blood type, and type O red blood cells can be given to people with any ABO blood type. Since O-type blood plasma contains anti-A and anti-B antibodies, it is generally not transfused to people with A, B, or AB blood types. Similarly, people with O-type blood generally do not accept red blood cells from A, B, or AB blood types.

The Rh blood group system is another blood group system. Blood of the same type can be transfused, but in any case, blood must be matched before transfusion.

If blood is transfused too quickly and in large amounts between people with different blood types, the transfused agglutinins will not have time to be diluted, which may cause red blood cell agglutination. Therefore, the principle of blood transfusion should be to transfuse blood of the same type. Blood transfusion between people with different blood types should only be used in emergency situations as a last resort.

Under normal circumstances, considering that there are many types of human blood type systems, for the sake of caution, even when blood transfusions are performed between people with the same ABO blood type, a cross-matching test should be performed first. That is, not only the red blood cells of the blood donor and the serum of the blood recipient should be tested for blood type matching, but also the red blood cells of the blood recipient and the serum of the blood donor should be tested for blood type matching. Only when there is no agglutination reaction when both blood types are matched, the blood are considered compatible and blood transfusion can be performed.

Is O blood type universal blood?

No.

Type O blood is a blood type that does not have A and B antigens on the surface of red blood cells, but there are still antibodies against A and B antigens in the plasma.

The patient's red blood cells will react with the antibodies in the transfused O-type blood, causing danger.

However, O-type blood can be used in some special situations and in small amounts for emergency purposes, but it cannot be used as a large-scale and regular blood transfusion method.

Therefore, O-type blood cannot be used as universal blood for blood transfusion to others.
