Is the incidence of bile duct cancer high?

Is the incidence of bile duct cancer high? Many people have this question. Many people are afraid of cancer and pay great attention to the incidence of cancer, fearing that they will die soon after getting cancer. Today, we will solve this doubt for you and introduce the incidence of bile duct cancer.

Cholangiocarcinoma refers to a malignant tumor of the extrahepatic bile duct that originates from the confluence of the left and right hepatic ducts to the lower end of the common bile duct. Cholangiocarcinoma can be divided into three types: hilar cholangiocarcinoma or upper cholangiocarcinoma, middle cholangiocarcinoma, and lower cholangiocarcinoma.

Primary bile duct cancer is rare, accounting for 0.01% to 0.46% of ordinary autopsies, 2% of autopsies of tumor patients, and 0.3% to 1.8% of bile duct surgery. In Europe and the United States, gallbladder cancer is 1.5 to 5 times that of bile duct cancer, while Japanese data show that bile duct cancer is more common than gallbladder cancer. The male-to-female ratio is about 1.5 to 3.0. The age of onset is mostly 50 to 70 years old, but it can also be seen in young people. Cholangiocarcinoma can occur in various parts of the extrahepatic bile duct, among which the proximal bile duct (hilar bile duct) is the most common, accounting for about 58%, the middle and distal bile ducts account for 13% and 18% respectively, and those that occur in the cystic duct account for 4%, and another 7% are diffuse.

Cancer experts say that gallbladder cancer ranks first among malignant tumors of the gallbladder, and others include sarcoma, carcinoid, primary malignant melanoma, giant cell adenocarcinoma, etc. Primary gallbladder cancer is relatively rare in clinical practice and has not attracted people's attention for a long time. According to domestic textbooks, it only accounts for about 1% of all cancers. Due to the widespread development of imaging examinations such as B-ultrasound and CT, gallbladder cancer has gradually been recognized and the detection rate has increased.

Cancer experts point out that the incidence of gallbladder cancer varies significantly by region. In India, Gupta reported that the incidence of gallbladder cancer accounts for 3.6% of all cancers and 31.8% of digestive tract malignancies, while in the United States, it ranks behind the rectum, colon, pancreas and stomach in digestive tract tumors, accounting for 3% of digestive tract tumors. The incidence of gallbladder cancer in women is 2 to 4 times higher than that in men.
