Teratoma is a germ cell tumor with multidirectional differentiation potential, which often contains various tissue components of the three germ layers with disordered arrangement structure. Teratoma is a common type of ovarian germ cell tumor. It is not evolved after a woman becomes pregnant with a freak, but is derived from the abnormal proliferation of germ cells. It is a tumor that grows in ovarian tissue and is formed by the abnormal proliferation and aggregation of germ cells. Because germ cells contain three tissue components of the human body: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm, the tumor will contain ectoderm tissues such as hair, oil, skin, teeth, and bone pieces, and may also contain mesoderm or endoderm tissues such as muscle, gastrointestinal, and thyroid tissues.

Once a teratoma is diagnosed, early surgical resection is necessary to prevent benign teratoma from becoming malignant due to delayed surgery, and to prevent infection, rupture, bleeding and complications. The key point of teratoma surgery is to completely remove the tumor. For ovarian and testicular tumors, one ovary or testicle should be removed. For sacrococcygeal teratoma, the coccyx must be removed at the same time to avoid residual pluripotent cells that may cause tumor recurrence.
