Nursing measures for postoperative urostomy in patients with bladder cancer

Bladder cancer patients who undergo urinary tract diversion surgery should pay special attention to the care of the urinary stoma, maintain good personal hygiene, prevent stoma infection, and improve the quality of life of patients after surgery.

Correctly manage your stoma when urinating

Patients with urinary stomas should learn to properly take care of the stoma during excretion. Patients need to use a special urine bag attached to the opening of the abdominal wall to collect urine and ensure that it does not leak. To avoid abnormal odor, the skin around the stoma should be cleaned with warm water every day and gently dried. If urine overflows, it should be scrubbed clean immediately and clothes and sheets should be changed in time. Urinary stoma bags with chassis are now available on the market. When using, the chassis is directly attached to the skin around the stoma. The sealing degree is good and the urine will not overflow. There is a valve at the bottom of the bag. After it is filled with urine, open the valve to drain the urine. When sleeping at night, connect another drainage bag and hang it under the bed to drain the discharged urine into the drainage bag to ensure that sleep at night is not affected and eliminate the worry of urine overflow soaking clothes and quilts.

Nursing for urine leakage

In the early stage of urostomy care, patients may inevitably leak urine and smell fishy smells due to lack of familiarity, which may make patients feel distressed, irritable, nervous, embarrassed, etc. At this time, family members should understand the patient's mood, patiently persuade the patient, help with nursing and cleaning, wash the patient's clothes frequently, and use some perfume to significantly reduce the odor. The understanding and help of family members can help patients dispel their worries and rest at ease.

Nursing care for stoma abnormalities

Patients should learn to observe the stoma, and choose medication treatment with the help and advice of a doctor when abnormalities occur: when pale edema occurs around the stoma, 50% magnesium sulfate or pure glycerin can be used for wet compresses; when the skin around the stoma is irritated by urine and becomes eroded or eczema, zinc oxide ointment or cortisone ointment can be used; if redness, swelling and secretions occur, seek medical attention promptly and use antibiotics for treatment.
