What factors can cause lung cancer

What factors can cause lung cancer

The lungs and respiratory tract are open organs that are in direct contact with the outside world. Many external carcinogenic factors can cause lung cancer. The main risk factors for lung cancer include smoking, genetics, air pollution, mental and psychological factors, and occupational hazards.

(1) Smoking causes lung cancer : It is now generally recognized that smoking is an important risk factor for lung cancer. Tobacco leaves and smoke contain a variety of ulcer-causing and cancer-promoting agents such as tar and benzophenone. It is estimated that about 85% of lung cancer is related to smoking, and smokers are 12-22 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers.

(2) Occupational carcinogens cause lung cancer: smoke, dichloromethyl ether, tobacco, tar, nickel smelting, mustard, chromium, occupational carcinogens include organic arsenic compounds, asphalt, coal, asbestos and vinyl chloride, etc. Those who are exposed to occupational carcinogens for a long time at work have a significantly increased risk of developing lung cancer.

(3) Lung cancer caused by the family environment : The decoration materials of the house and the fumes produced when cooking contain many ulcer-causing substances. Passive smoking caused by family members smoking can also pollute the family environment. The incidence of lung cancer in women may be related to long-term inhalation of cooking fumes.

(4) Air pollution causes lung cancer : With the progress of society and the development of industry, the production and use of many industrial raw materials and products containing carcinogens have increased, which not only increases the number of workers directly exposed to lung cancer, but also aggravates the degree of air pollution caused by carcinogens. The exhaust gas discharged by cars, asphalt used in road and house construction, etc. all contain carcinogens, making air pollution increasingly serious. The incidence of lung cancer in industrially developed countries is higher than that in industrially backward countries, higher in cities than in rural areas, higher in large cities than in medium and small cities, and higher in urban areas than in suburbs. This may be related to the fact that air pollution is more serious in cities.

(5) Ionizing radiation causes lung cancer : Radiation exposure can cause a variety of malignant tumors, including lung cancer. People who are occupationally exposed to radiation have an increased risk of developing lung cancer. People can also be exposed to radiation in their daily lives, and some house decoration materials also contain substances that can generate radiation. For example, radioactive gas oxygen, which is widely present in human living and working environments, has been announced by the World Health Organization as one of the main environmental carcinogens and one of the main risk factors for causing lung cancer in humans. It is the second largest factor in inducing lung cancer after smoking.

(6) Chronic lung diseases cause lung cancer: Chronic infections such as viral infections, fungal infections and chronic bronchitis may increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers. A study conducted by several international research institutions pointed out that asthma patients are more likely to develop lung cancer than healthy people, and female asthma patients have a higher risk of lung cancer than male patients.

(7) Genetic factors cause lung cancer : There is also a genetic tendency for lung ulcers. There are many smokers in the population, but only a few of them suffer from lung cancer. Some people suffer from lung cancer because of smoking, while others do not. In addition to the amount of smoking and the length of time of smoking, this is mainly related to the person's physical constitution. Physical constitution is determined by genetics, which is what is often called genetic susceptibility in medicine.

(8) Other causes of lung cancer : The body's immune function and the occurrence of lung cancer are also related to psychological factors and dietary nutrition.

In general, the occurrence of lung cancer is the result of the combined action of multiple factors, and there is a synergistic carcinogenic effect between different factors. In other words, under the combined action of two or more carcinogenic factors, the risk of lung cancer is higher. Once lung cancer is discovered, most of them have reached the middle and late stages, and the 5-year survival rate is low. Therefore, the primary prevention of lung cancer is extremely important, that is, eliminating the causes of lung cancer, such as quitting smoking, improving the living environment, paying attention to a balanced diet and maintaining a happy spirit, so as to prevent the occurrence of lung cancer. Don't forget to have a health check-up once a year!
