What is the relationship between spleen and liver?

The spleen and liver are originally two organs, but when they exist in the human body at the same time, the relationship between the two is very close. The relationship between the two is mainly blood production and blood storage. Once the liver function is poor, it will trigger the digestive function of the spleen and stomach. Similarly, poor spleen and stomach will also lead to poor liver function. It can be seen that the two have a mutually influential relationship, and they must be protected together.

1. Relationship between the Liver and Spleen

The liver and spleen are mainly responsible for the relationship between regulating and transporting blood, and producing and storing blood. The spleen's function of transportation and transformation depends on the smooth flow of liver qi, while the liver's function of dispersing qi and storing blood requires the spleen and stomach to produce essence and energy for nourishment. If the spleen fails to function properly, blood production is insufficient, which can lead to liver blood deficiency. If the liver qi is stagnant and fails to regulate its function, this will affect the rise and fall of the spleen and stomach, causing dysfunction of transportation and transformation, resulting in decreased digestive function and loss of appetite, which can lead to "liver and spleen disharmony". If the spleen and stomach are damp and hot, this will steam up the liver and gallbladder, causing liver and gallbladder to regulate their function poorly, which can cause jaundice. From this we can see that liver disease can be transmitted to the spleen, and spleen disease can affect the liver, and they influence each other.

2. The relationship between liver and kidney

The liver and kidneys are mainly related to storing blood and essence. The liver stores blood, the kidneys store essence; the liver and kidneys have the same origin, and essence and blood are generated from each other. Liver blood needs to rely on the nourishment and production of kidney essence, and kidney essence needs to be continuously replenished by liver blood. The two are interdependent and support each other. If the kidney yin is insufficient and the liver is not nourished, it can cause the so-called "water cannot contain wood" symptoms of liver yin deficiency and liver yang hyperactivity; conversely, long-term hyperactivity of liver yang and depletion of yin essence can also aggravate kidney yin deficiency and cause symptoms such as headache, dizziness, weakness in the waist and knees, turbid urine or edema. This relationship is mainly reflected in women's menstrual physiology and men's ejaculation function.

3. The relationship between liver and lungs

The liver stores blood and the lungs store qi. The yin and yang of the liver and lung qi rise and fall to maintain the normal rise and fall of the human body's qi. Although the heart is in charge of the circulation of qi and blood, it must be restricted by the lungs' regulating function and the liver's regulating function. The two organs play a certain role in the circulation of qi and blood throughout the body.

The liver and lungs influence each other. Such as abnormal rise and fall of Qi: liver Qi stagnation, Qi stagnation turns into fire, liver fire burns the lungs, and the lungs fail to clear and purify themselves. Common symptoms include side pain, irritability, cough, hemoptysis, etc., which are symptoms of liver fire invading the lungs (wood fire injuring metal). On the contrary, if the lungs fail to clear and purify, dryness and heat will descend, which may also affect the liver. If the liver fails to function properly and the qi and blood flow out of the body are not smooth, then along with the cough, there will be symptoms such as chest and flank pain and fullness, headache, dizziness, flushed face and eyes, etc., which are caused by dryness of the lungs damaging the liver (metal failing to control wood).
