What coffee beans are used for Americano?

So-called American coffee is classified according to the degree of roasting of the coffee beans. Because Americans don't like bitter coffee, and the darker the coffee beans are roasted, the bitterer the coffee tastes. Therefore, American coffee beans are generally a lighter roasted blend of coffee beans. However, the coffee made from the same coffee beans using different coffee utensils has completely different flavors.

Coffee Brewing Method

Drip Filter

The structure of this drip pot is very simple. It only has a conical container, which looks like a cup. The inner edge of the container must be covered with filter paper, and then coffee powder is put in and brewed with hot water. This method allows the hot water to come into contact with the coffee powder once before it falls into the cup, so only the substances with higher activity are extracted, thus brewing a fragrant coffee with the least unpleasant flavors.

Italian espresso machine

Espresso is a method of brewing coffee using easy-to-use technology. The standard for a cup of espresso is about 7 grams of coffee powder, water temperature of about 95 degrees, water pressure of about 10 atmospheres, and brewing time between 22-28 seconds. If the water temperature is too low, it will result in insufficient extraction, and you will only be able to brew a cup of espresso that lacks flavor and tastes sour. But if the water temperature is too high, the coffee will be overly bitter and astringent. The mellow flavor of coffee mainly comes from its water pressure. The general hot water brewing method can only extract the substances in coffee that are soluble in water, while high pressure can be used to extract the substances in coffee that are not soluble in water. These high pressures completely emulsify the lipids in the coffee and dissolve them into the water. The brewing time will determine the characteristics of this cup of coffee. Espresso uses high pressure to extract the flavor of coffee, which takes about 25 seconds. The coffee that flows out after the timeout has no taste and will only dilute the espresso.

American electric coffee maker

Generally, there are two types of internal containers of electric coffee makers, one is funnel-shaped and the other is wide and flat cylindrical. I recommend using the former when brewing coffee in small quantities. The coffee powder will be concentrated in the narrow bottom, slowing down the speed of hot water flowing through. In the latter case, the coffee powder can only be spread on the bottom of the container, a thin layer. When the hot water passes through quickly, no coffee is soaked at all. Most of the electric coffee machines currently on the market have internal nozzles that spray hot water radially in all directions, but the amount of coffee powder is too little, so some of the hot water can only be sprayed onto the filter paper but not the coffee powder. So most of it is brewed into a diluted cup of coffee!

French Press

The filter press can best show the original flavor and wildness. Its operating principle is to brew coffee directly with hot water and filter it with an iron mesh, which extracts almost all the substances that can be extracted, so a cup of turbid coffee will be formed. And the flavors are original and complex. Generally, high-quality coffee is well suited to this brewing method. But inferior coffee beans have no flavor at all, leaving only bitterness.

Siphon pot

A siphon pot uses a water pipe to use air pressure to move water from the lower container to the upper container to form a cup of coffee. Therefore, it is also called vacuum pot and plug pot. Siphon pots are basically not used in Europe and the United States, but they are very popular in Japan, Taiwan, and mainland China.

Moka Pot

The Moka pot is composed of an upper pot, a filter, and a lower pot, with the filter being between the upper and lower pots. When brewing, water is put in the lower pot and the coffee is placed in the net in the middle. When the lower pot is heated, steam is generated, which pushes the hot water upward. It passes through the coffee grounds and then enters the upper pot to form coffee. Because its air pressure is relatively high, some people classify it as high-pressure cooking. Some people also call it handmade espresso, but it cannot produce the foam of espresso. But it is indeed a strong coffee.
