Radiotherapy is a treatment method for cancer or tumors. The process of radiotherapy is very painful and can easily cause some side effects to the body. It is also very common to fart with mucus and blood in the stool after radiotherapy. This is a symptom caused by intestinal irritation during radiotherapy. It can also easily lead to loss of appetite or physical fatigue.

This is a normal reaction. This is how rectal secretions and necrotic tissue in the tumor are discharged.

Common radiation reactions and injuries include the following:

1. General reactions: may manifest as loss of appetite, fatigue, headache, dizziness, low immune function, etc.

2. Gastrointestinal reactions: may manifest as nausea, vomiting, indigestion, epigastric discomfort, abdominal distension, diarrhea, etc.

3. Blood picture reaction: It may be manifested as a decrease in the number of white blood cells in the peripheral blood. Bone marrow suppression phenomena such as thrombocytopenia.

4. Local reactions: Since different tissues in the body have different tolerance to radiation, and the type, dose, and irradiation area of ​​radiation are also different, the manifestations in different tissues are also inconsistent.

(1 Skin, radiation reactions of the skin within the irradiated area are generally divided into three degrees; the first degree radiation skin reaction is dry dermatitis, with erythema, itching, hair loss, pigmentation, and dilation of hair follicles in the irradiated area, similar to acne-like changes. The second degree skin radiation reaction is moist dermatitis, with congestion and edema of the skin, transparent blisters of varying sizes, which may ooze out after rupture, and cause burning pain. The third degree skin radiation reaction is radiation ulcers and ulcers, with severe pain, and ulcers that are difficult to heal, often requiring excision and skin grafting. Skin radiation damage varies depending on the irradiated site, radiation quality, irradiation dose, and irradiated range, and there are great individual differences. The perineum and armpits are most likely to experience skin reactions.

(2) The radiation reaction of mucous membrane is similar to that of skin, but because of the strong repair ability of mucous membrane, it is not easy to cause too much damage.

(3) Salivary glands are very sensitive to radiation. After exposure to radiation, the glands are damaged and secretion decreases, which can easily lead to dry mouth, which is sometimes difficult to eliminate.

(4) The lens of the eye is very sensitive to radiation. Even a small dose of radiation can cause the lens to become cloudy and lead to cataracts. The cornea may ulcerate after exposure to high doses of radiation.

(5) Bones: Bones are prone to osteoporosis after being exposed to a certain amount of radiation and are prone to fractures when subjected to external force. Bone tissue in the growth and development stage is very sensitive to radiation. Even a small dose of radiation can inhibit its growth, causing development to stop and resulting in deformities.

(6) The brain can tolerate moderate doses of radiation, but large doses of radiation can cause brain atrophy and necrosis. The spinal cord has a certain tolerance to radiation. Exceeding the tolerated dose will cause radiation myelitis, which may cause sensory and motor disorders in mild cases and hemiplegia and paraplegia in severe cases.

(7) Lung damage causes radiation pneumonitis in the early stages and radiation pulmonary fibrosis in the late stages. Patients may experience chest tightness, shortness of breath, cough, sputum, and even fever, as well as decreased lung function.

(8) During abdominal and pelvic radiotherapy, radiation exceeding the gastrointestinal tolerance dose can cause radiation gastroenteritis. Radiation enteritis, in particular, causes ulcers, necrosis and stenosis of the local mucosa of the small intestine. Severe cases require surgery to relieve the symptoms. Radiation colitis causes diarrhea and bloody stools in patients. Radiation cystitis may manifest as hematuria, frequent urination, and in severe cases, bladder contracture and bladder weakness, requiring catheterization or surgery. Radiation nephritis may lead to renal hypertension, heart disease and heart failure.

During radiotherapy, close attention should be paid to the above-mentioned situations. When the patient has severe or intolerable reactions, the radiotherapy plan should be adjusted in time or radiotherapy should be stopped immediately, and various side effects should be treated symptomatically.
