Can Norovirus kill people?

Many people don’t know much about Norovirus. This is a virus that is prone to occur in the spring. Children are the most vulnerable group. Generally speaking, Norovirus infection will not lead to death. Of course, if the condition is particularly serious or the child has poor physical constitution and does not receive timely and formal treatment, there will be certain risks. Let’s take a look at this aspect below.

Can Norovirus kill people?

Can Norovirus kill you?

Norovirus generally does not cause death. Norovirus can cause gastrointestinal infections. The main symptoms are nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, which usually last 1-2 days and usually appear 12-48 hours after infection with the virus. The incubation period is usually 24 to 48 hours, with the shortest being 12 hours and the longest being 72 hours. The infection occurs suddenly, with the main symptoms being nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Vomiting is common in children, while diarrhea is more common in adults, with 4 to 8 episodes of diarrhea within 24 hours. The stool is loose or watery, without mucus, pus or blood. Routine stool microscopic examination showed WBC<15 and no RBC. Patients with primary infection have significantly more vomiting symptoms than those with secondary infection, and some infected patients only show vomiting symptoms. In addition, symptoms such as headache, chills and muscle pain may also be seen, and in severe cases, dehydration symptoms may occur.

How to deal with Norovirus

Isolate yourself to prevent the spread of the virus: If a family member has been infected with the norovirus, you need to self-isolate and can only go to work or school three days after recovery.

Take good protective measures and disinfect thoroughly: The surfaces of objects such as bedding and floors contaminated by the patient's vomit and feces should be cleaned and sprayed (mopped, scrubbed) with a chlorine-containing disinfectant containing 1000 mg/L of effective chlorine. Contaminated clothing can also be disinfected by boiling.

Mops, rags and other cleaning utensils also need to be soaked and disinfected in chlorine-containing disinfectants. When carrying out disinfection, you must also wear a mask and gloves to ensure personal protection.

Maintain good personal hygiene: It is important to say it three times: wash your hands frequently, frequently, frequently, and thoroughly with hot water and soap, especially before and after meals, and after defecation.
