What is Hydroxypropyl Cellulose used for?

Hydroxypropyl cellulose is something that many people are very unfamiliar with. In fact, it is a white powder. Some hydroxypropyl cellulose may be light yellow in appearance. This chemical substance is not only easily soluble in water, but also in liquids such as methanol and ethanol. It has very good thermoplasticity. People will add this cellulose when making latex to make the latex more stable. It also has the following uses.

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Uses:

Low substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose

Low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose (L-HPC) is mainly used as a tablet disintegrant and binder. The characteristics of using low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose (L-HPC) as a binder and disintegrant are: easy to compress and form, strong applicability, especially for tablets that are difficult to form, plastic and brittle. Adding low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose (L-HPC) can increase the hardness and brightness of the tablets and make the tablets disintegrate quickly. Even if the hardness of the tablet reaches 13kg and it does not break, it only takes more than ten minutes to disintegrate, thereby improving the intrinsic quality of the tablets and improving the efficacy. The disintegration of tablets made with low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose (L-HPC) is not affected by long-term storage.

As tablet binder, generally add 5-20% during wet granulation, and 5-20% when direct powder tableting. As tablet disintegrant, the dosage is 2-10%, generally 5%. It can be added internally or externally, depending on the specific prescription.

Low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose (L-HPC) can also be used as a food additive. In the food industry, it is used as an emulsifier, stabilizer, suspending agent, thickener, and film-forming agent. It is used in the manufacture of beverages, cakes, jams, etc.

Low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose (L-HPC) is also used in the daily chemical industry for the manufacture of cosmetics such as creams, shampoos, and lotions.

Highly substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose

1. Used as a viscous agent: In the pharmaceutical field, this product is mainly used as a binder, such as a binder for tablets, granules, and fine particles.

2. Used as film coating material for tablets. HPC has excellent film-forming properties. The resulting film is tough and elastic, comparable to plasticizers. By mixing with other anti-wetting coating agents, the performance of the film can be further improved.

3. Used as a thickener for elixirs, an additive for lotions and a stabilizer for emulsions.

4. It can be used as skeleton material to prepare skeleton sustained-release tablets, sustained-release pellets and double-layer sustained-release tablets.

5. Used as a gel in ethanol applications and as an ointment base.
