For example, Chinese herbal medicines such as Platycodon grandiflorum, Fritillaria cirrhosa or Aristolochia can all play a good role in relieving cough and reducing phlegm, clearing away heat and dispersing nodules.

1. Citrus grandiflora

Platycodon is the root of the Platycodon grandiflorum plant of the Campanulaceae family, which contains platycodon saponins, spinasterol and its glycosides, platycodonic acid, etc. Among them, platycodon saponins can stimulate the mucous membrane, causing hypersecretion of the mucous membrane, diluting the sputum and promoting its discharge; at the same time, saponins also have antitussive, sedative and antipyretic effects; in addition, Platycodon grandiflorum also has anti-inflammatory effects, so the use of Platycodon grandiflorum in combination with other drugs to treat sore throat, colds and coughs, and other respiratory tract inflammations, such as bronchitis and pneumonia, can achieve satisfactory results.

It contains a variety of alkaloids, and both the total alkaloids and the non-alkaloid parts have antitussive and expectorant effects. Therefore, it is widely used to treat chronic and acute tracheitis, cough caused by upper respiratory tract infection and tuberculosis. Especially for those who still cough after the upper respiratory tract infection is controlled and have difficulty spitting, taking Fritillaria cirrhosa powder or Fritillaria tablets will have a better effect.

The aristolochic acid it contains also has the effects of anti-cancer, anti-infection and enhancing the activity of phagocytes. In addition, Aristolochia spp. also has a mild and lasting antihypertensive effect.
