What are the uses of magnesium oxide?

Everyone knows that magnesium is a relatively active metal element, and magnesium reacts chemically with oxygen to form magnesium oxide, which is an inert substance that can be used in various daily life purposes and can also be used in industry. This substance is also an industrial product produced in large quantities in modern life and has many uses. Let’s take a look at the uses of magnesium oxide. I hope everyone can understand.

Magnesium oxide (chemical formula: MgO) is magnesium oxide, an ionic compound. It is a white solid at room temperature. Magnesium oxide exists in nature in the form of periclase and is the raw material for magnesium smelting.

1. One of the main uses of magnesium oxide is as a flame retardant. Traditional flame retardant materials widely use flame retardant mixtures composed of halogen-containing polymers or halogen-containing flame retardants.

2. Another use of magnesium oxide is as a neutralizer. Magnesium oxide is alkaline and has good adsorption properties. It can be used as a neutralizer for acidic waste gas, wastewater treatment, and waste liquid treatment containing heavy metals and organic matter. With the improvement of environmental protection requirements, domestic demand is growing rapidly.

3. Compressed magnesium oxide can be used as optical coating. The coating is transparent when the thickness is between 300 nanometers and 7 millimeters. A 1 mm thick coating has a refractive index of 1.72.

4. Used for rock climbing, can absorb sweat from hands. (Note: Inhalation of magnesium oxide fume can cause metal fume disease.)

5. Mainly used to prepare oral medicines to neutralize excess stomach acid. Commonly used preparations include: magnesium milk - emulsion; magnesium cap tablets - each tablet contains 0.1g of MgO; acid-making powder - a powder made by mixing magnesium oxide and sodium bicarbonate, etc.

6. Light magnesium oxide is mainly used as raw material for preparing ceramics, enamel, refractory crucibles and refractory bricks. It is also used as a filler for polishing agents, adhesives and paper, and as an accelerator and activator for chloroprene rubber and fluororubber.

The above is an explanation of the uses of magnesium oxide. I hope everyone can understand that although this substance has many uses, it must not be used for food, otherwise it will easily cause harm to the body.
