How to detect macular degeneration in time?

Macular degeneration is an eye disease with great harm. Once the patient is sick, it will cause vision loss and there is a risk of blindness. In addition, this disease is very difficult to treat and has irreversible characteristics, especially age-related macular degeneration, which has a relatively high incidence rate and is more harmful. In order to prevent the harm of macular degeneration, timely examinations should be carried out to detect macular lesions in time.

There are three methods that can help detect macular degeneration. Self-examination and form examination are good ways to make a preliminary judgment, while fundus examination is recommended to be performed regularly for early detection.

1. Eye examination

It is recommended that high-risk groups undergo regular check-ups. It can directly observe the condition of the optic disc, blood vessels and macula of the fundus. Other fundus examination methods include fundus photography, fundus angiography, etc., through which early macular lesions can be detected.

2. Self-diagnosis of diseases

Through self-detection of macular degeneration, symptoms such as blurred vision and distorted vision can be discovered in time. The elderly can often alternately close their eyes to see if the vision of both eyes is the same. Some people are careless and one eye has a vision of 1.5 and the other has a vision of 0.1. This means there is bleeding in the fundus, but it is not discovered until a physical examination.

But if you can try opening and closing one eye early, you will find that the open eye can no longer see clearly, so closing and reclosing your eyes alternately is a good method for initial examination.

3. Table detection

The Amsler chart is used to detect the occurrence of macular degeneration. One type of the chart has a black background and white squares, and the other type has a white background and black squares. You can stare at the squares to see if the lines are straight, if there are any bends, and if any of the squares are foggy or dark. If any of the above conditions occur, it means there is a problem with the macula and you should go to the hospital for a check-up as soon as possible.

Common manifestations of macular degeneration

1. Central vision loss

In the early stages of macular degeneration, blurred vision and decreased vision will occur. As macular degeneration gradually worsens, vision becomes increasingly worse and becomes irreversible, causing blindness.

2. Central vision dark spot

The structure of the macular area is severely damaged, and the patient's central vision will be damaged. A dark spot will appear in the center. For example, you can't see where you are looking, but you can see things clearly in the surroundings.

3. Distorted vision

The images of objects appear smaller or larger than the real objects, and straight door and window frames are seen as bent or tilted.

Macular degeneration is classified as "blurred vision" and "sudden blindness" in traditional Chinese medicine. In the past, due to limitations in conditions and diagnostic technology, this disease has not been studied in depth. In recent years, many ophthalmologists have conducted a lot of clinical research in this area and have gained a relatively complete understanding of the TCM etiology and pathogenesis of this disease and the dialectical rules of each disease stage.
