What are the symptoms of cataracts in the eyes

Nowadays, more and more people in society suffer from cataracts. Cataracts have become a relatively common eye disease, so they are very familiar to many people. However, many patients do not know that they have cataracts and often miss the best time for treatment. In fact, cataracts start with the inability to see clearly. When this happens, you should pay attention. Let’s learn about the symptoms of cataracts.

1. Refractive changes

Cataract patients often feel that their presbyopia has been reduced, but their myopia has increased. Or those who did not have myopia may need to wear myopia glasses to see objects clearly in the distance.

2. Decreased vision

This is the most obvious symptom of cataracts. Usually, decreased vision is related to the location and degree of lens opacity. Patients can feel that their vision is constantly declining, and things are becoming increasingly blurred. In severe cases, only light perception may remain. Because the location and degree of lens opacity are different, patients with different degrees of cataract will feel that their visual field has different degrees of defects, and they cannot see everything and it is relatively narrow.

3. Monocular diplopia or polyopia

This is because the opacity in the lens makes the refractive power of different parts of the lens uneven. To put it simply, it will cause monocular double vision or multiple vision, just like a prism, and there will be many images when looking at things.

4. Improvement of presbyopia

Patients feel that their eyesight has "improved" and they no longer need to wear reading glasses when reading books or newspapers, creating the illusion that their vision has "rejuvenated." In fact, this is not an improvement in vision, but the myopia caused by sclerosis of the lens nucleus offsets the hyperopia caused by reading glasses.

5. There is a fixed black shadow in front of the eyes

The patient may feel that there is a fixed, hazy black shadow in front of his eyes, which is more obvious under sunlight or light. This is a manifestation of early localized opacity of the lens, but it must be distinguished from the clear and progressively expanding black shadow in front of the eyes caused by retinal detachment.
