If you have toothache and swollen gums, first check if you have a sore throat, because a sore throat is most likely to cause swollen gums. If you have a sore throat, you need to adjust your diet in time, eat more bitter melon, eggplant, watermelon, etc., and keep a good mood at ordinary times.

(1) Heat-clearing and detoxifying foods : such as chrysanthemum, cucumber, isatis root, tomato, bamboo shoots, mung bean, tofu, celery, water chestnut, water caltrop, purslane, day lily, etc. Most of them have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and are suitable for various symptoms of excess fire.

(4) Attacking the Excessive Fire: Such as rhubarb, anemarrhena, coptis, scutellaria, banana, celery, potato, sesame, peach kernel, jellyfish, white radish, etc., suitable for symptoms such as short yellow urine, dry stool, dry and bitter mouth, abdominal distension and poor appetite.

(5) Blood-cooling and blood-retaining foods: such as lotus root, pear, water chestnut, raw earth, fungus, eel, glutinous rice, lotus root powder, shepherd's purse, corn silk, mango, eel, bamboo leaf, Imperata root, purslane, etc. They can be used for epistaxis, bloody stool, hematuria, bleeding gums and other conditions caused by blood heat.

(6) Sweet and warm herbs that can eliminate heat: Such as Codonopsis pilosula, Atractylodes macrocephala, cabbage, litchi, chestnut, jujube, walnut kernel, lily, black sesame, bird's nest, royal jelly, sorghum, fennel, sword bean, mustard greens, cherry, pomegranate, black plum, etc., suitable for conditions of Qi deficiency and excess fire.

(7) Yin-nourishing and fire-reducing foods: such as soft-shelled turtle, kelp, seaweed, sea cucumber, spinach, pig blood, pig liver, brown sugar, black chicken, pumpkin, clam, white fungus, etc. They are mostly used for symptoms such as Yin deficiency and fire excess, fever in the five parts of the body, hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia.

(8) Foods that nourish the internal organs and extinguish internal heat: such as black beans, yam, peanuts, milk, coix seeds, white fungus, pigeon eggs, quail, bird meat, eel, mutton, dog meat, leeks, mulberries, etc., are suitable for various symptoms of internal heat caused by weak internal organs and insufficient yang energy.

When using food therapy to treat swollen and painful gums, you should follow the following general principles:

(1) Foods should mainly consist of soft, crispy, easy-to-digest and absorb foods. Side dishes should mainly be steamed, stewed, boiled or roasted. Eat less greasy foods that are difficult to digest, such as fried, roasted or deep-fried.

(2) Drink more water to replenish the water lost when the gums are swollen, painful, and hot. It can also promote metabolism, promote fluid production and promote diuresis, and accelerate the excretion of toxins and the dissipation of heat.

(3) Avoid eating spicy or hot foods, such as chili peppers, dried ginger, raw garlic, pepper, strong tea, tobacco, strong liquor, coffee, green onions, etc., so as to avoid generating heat, burning body fluids, and worsening the condition.

(4) People with excess fire should eat more cold and heat-clearing foods, such as mung beans, eggplant, winter melon, loofah, bitter melon, etc. They should avoid foods that boost yang and stimulate heat, such as leeks, mutton, dog meat, sparrow meat, sorghum, longan, cherries, apricots, etc.

(5) People with internal heat should take supplements of yin-nourishing foods such as white fungus, lily, mulberry, clam meat, and turtle meat. They should avoid eating too many raw and cold fruits and various cold foods.

(6) It is important to pay attention to “differential diet”, analyze the actual situation of gingival swelling and pain, and carry out targeted diet therapy, choosing foods that can clear away heat and reduce fire in gingival swelling and pain. If we treat the disease in the same way without distinguishing between real fire and false fire, we will often not get good results. Sometimes it may even make the condition worse, adding fuel to the fire. This is the reason why some patients do not pay attention to dialectical treatment of food and blindly self-diagnose and self-treat, resulting in poor results.
