What is adrenal glucocorticoid

What is adrenal glucocorticoid

Many people don’t know much about adrenal glucocorticoids, and most people don’t know what adrenal glucocorticoids are. In fact, adrenal glucocorticoids are also a type of adrenal cortical hormone with a very wide range of effects. This hormone has certain anti-inflammatory pharmacological effects.

1. Adrenal glucocorticoid is a type of adrenal cortex hormone. Adrenal cortex hormone is the general term for hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex and belongs to the steroid compound. The effects of glucocorticoids are wide-ranging and complex and vary with dose. The glucocorticoids secreted under physiological conditions mainly affect the metabolic process of substances, while supraphysiological doses of glucocorticoids also have anti-inflammatory, anti-immune and other pharmacological effects. It has the function of regulating the biosynthesis and metabolism of sugar, fat, and protein, and also has anti-inflammatory effects. It is called "glucocorticoid" because its activity in regulating carbohydrate metabolism was first recognized by people.

2. Adrenal cortical hormones have been used in clinical practice for half a century. A survey in our country shows that 50% to 70% of rheumatoid arthritis patients have taken and/or are still taking hormones. There are many people who take it for several years, or even for more than ten years. Therefore, it is necessary to further improve the understanding of corticosteroids. First of all, hormones cannot be considered a "panacea" drug.

3. Clinically confirmed that long-term use of hormones has no obvious effect on bone destruction in rheumatoid arthritis, but significantly increases the incidence of cataracts and fractures. For polyarteritis nodosa and Wegener's granulomatosis, hormones can only play a limited role. Really controlling the disease, significantly improving the five-year survival rate, and even achieving long-term remission or cure in some patients still depends on the addition of cyclophosphamide. The same is true for lupus nephritis. Cytotoxic immunosuppressants can not only better control the disease, but also help reduce the dosage of hormones. The beneficial effects of hormones are affected by dosage, but long-term and excessive use of hormones has many side effects. So hormones are a double-edged sword, with both advantages and disadvantages.
