How to disinfect dentures

Wearing dentures is the most common way to repair dental problems. Many people always feel that dentures have no vitality and do not need our maintenance after wearing them, so they always do not pay attention to oral hygiene. This can easily lead to food residues in the mouth and breed bacteria, which is also very bad for health. Therefore, we must pay attention to disinfecting dentures. Let’s learn how to disinfect dentures.

How to disinfect dentures?

The plastic base of full dentures is made of polymethyl methacrylate. Ordinary disinfectants will cause tooth cracks or micro cracks on its surface, thereby reducing the strength of the denture plastic, causing damage, corrosion or accelerated aging of the denture. Therefore, patients should not use some household disinfectants (such as 84, alcohol) to soak dentures.

In addition, removable dentures cannot be washed and disinfected with boiling water because the plastic parts of removable dentures will deform under high temperatures.

There are two main methods for cleaning dentures: mechanical and chemical. Mechanical methods include brushing with a toothbrush, toothpaste and tooth powder, or ultrasonic cleaning. Chemical methods include various commercial detergents, disinfectants and enzyme products.

Patients with removable dentures can remove their dentures for cleaning by themselves. They should take them off and clean them after each meal and should not sleep with their dentures on. You should take off your dentures before brushing your teeth before going to bed at night, and brush the dentures clean and soak them in cold water. Do not soak them in hot water or scrub them with alcohol. Soaking them in hot water may cause the dentures to deform, and scrubbing them with alcohol may cause cracks. Be careful not to use too much force when removing teeth, inserting teeth and brushing teeth to avoid breaking or deforming the denture clasp. Also, do not use a hard-bristled brush when cleaning dentures to avoid damaging the surface structure. Dentures can be disinfected with disinfectant.

The above is an introduction to how to disinfect dentures. After understanding it, we know that when disinfecting dentures, we must remember not to use alcohol lamps or chemical products. We must use toothpaste or go to a dental hospital for cleaning. If it is a removable denture, it must be removed and cleaned every day to ensure the cleanliness of the mouth.
