Normal color of fingernails

The normal color of fingernails is pink. Fingernails are generally transparent, but they appear pink because they cover the nail bed.

Fingernails themselves are colorless and transparent. Because there are many capillaries hidden on the nail bed and blood flows in these capillaries, the color of the nails is mainly light pink, which is a normal fingernail color. If the fingernails appear black or pale, it is a pathological condition and requires timely examination and treatment to achieve relief.

Pale fingernails may be caused by severe anemia. Because the number of platelets in the body decreases, the nails will become pale. You need to go to the hospital for blood tests to clearly check whether anemia occurs. At the same time, pale nails may also be caused by long-term malnutrition leading to a lack of harmful elements and vitamins in the body.

If the nails appear black, it is mostly caused by trauma. After the nails are hit by external force, the capillaries under the nails will rupture, and it will also cause local congestion or swelling. Therefore, part of the blood accumulates under the nail bed, causing the nails to turn black. Yellowing and thickening of nails are usually caused by onychomycosis, which is mainly caused by fungal infection.
