Can brain necrosis be recovered?

Brain necrosis is also called brain atrophy. Generally speaking, most cases occur in the elderly, but there are also adolescent patients. There are many causes of brain necrosis, such as meningitis, brain tumors, irregular and unhealthy daily life or accidents can also cause brain necrosis, such as long-term drinking, gas poisoning, etc. People with epilepsy can also suffer from brain necrosis. The high-risk group for brain necrosis is still women, especially elderly women who are entering old age.

1. If only the nerve fibers are damaged, they can still be repaired, but if they are necrotic, they cannot be repaired.

2. Brain nerve cells will continue to divide and proliferate to form new cells. This is to effectively utilize the existing neural networks to complete the body's advanced functions.

3. Brain neurons no longer divide and proliferate after birth and cannot regenerate. There is a reason for this in the brain. The brain needs to think, remember, express emotions, and complete complex advanced functions. To accomplish these functions, as they grow, neurons build intricate networks to remember their experiences.

4. However, if neurons divide and proliferate, the neural network that was previously formed with great effort can no longer be used, and a new network must be built from scratch each time, which is a very inefficient approach. In this case, it is difficult to complete advanced functions. Therefore, neurons are not replaced during life. However, it is also thanks to this that we can build neural networks bit by bit over the years, accumulate memories, think, improve judgment, and possess advanced mental and neural functions.

5. Because of this, usually, once neurons have degenerated and died, they cannot be revived, and damaged nerves cannot be restored. However, the surviving neurons will become more active, compensating for the function of the lost neurons and even restoring the function. The treatment for stroke and cognitive impairment in the elderly is based on this compensatory recovery training. * (Figure 1)

6. In recent years, with the progress of brain science and regenerative medicine, it has become possible to treat damaged brain by regenerating it. Brain diseases such as Parkinson's disease and cerebral infarction cause the continuous and massive death of brain neurons. Treatment methods such as transplanting new cells into the damaged parts of the brain or injecting neurotrophic factors that promote neuron regeneration to help the dying neurons recover are also being researched and developed. In the future, neurons may also regenerate and restore function just like healing.
