What does probiotic therapy mean?

Probiotics do not mean what the word suggests. They are active microorganisms. The yogurt we often drink is rich in probiotics. There are many types of probiotics and they have many functions. Due to its benefits to the human body, modern medicine has made full use of probiotics and developed a new therapy, referred to as probiotic therapy. So what is probiotic therapy?

1. Probiotics can relieve the symptoms of lactose intolerance and promote the body's nutrient absorption: Probiotics help digest nutrients in the intestines. It can break down lactose into lactic acid, alleviating lactose intolerance. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus can not only produce various vitamins such as vitamin B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin and folic acid to meet the body's needs, but also ensure the supply of vitamins by inhibiting certain vitamin-decomposing bacteria. In addition, Bifidobacterium can also reduce blood ammonia and improve liver function.

2. Probiotics have the effect of regulating the intestine, adjusting microecological imbalance, and preventing and treating diarrhea: Probiotics enter the human intestine alive, promote the normalization of intestinal bacterial flora through their growth and various metabolic effects, inhibit the production of corrupt substances in the intestine, and maintain normal intestinal function. It has therapeutic and preventive effects on viral and bacterial acute enteritis, dysentery, constipation, etc. Probiotics are closely related to many digestive tract diseases such as chronic gastritis and peptic ulcers. Some probiotics can resist gastric acid, adhere to the surface of gastric epithelial cells, inhibit the growth of Helicobacter pylori through their metabolic activities, and prevent the occurrence of gastric ulcers.

3. Probiotics can metabolize products to produce biological antagonism and enhance human immunity: Probiotics can produce organic acids, free fatty acids, hydrogen peroxide, and bacteriocins to inhibit the growth of other harmful bacteria; through "biological oxygen deprivation", aerobic pathogens are greatly reduced. Probiotics can colonize on surfaces such as mucous membranes and skin or between cells to form biological barriers. These barriers can prevent the colonization of pathogenic microorganisms and play a role in occupying space, competing for nutrients, mutualism or antagonism. It can also stimulate the body's nonspecific immune function, increase the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, enhance the secretion of intestinal immunoglobulin IgA, and improve the intestinal barrier function.

4. The effect of probiotics on hypertension: Certain substances produced by lactic acid bacteria, such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), have the effect of lowering blood pressure. There are also some probiotics that can specifically break down milk protein (casein) and produce polypeptides (such as VPP and LPP) that have the activity of inhibiting enzymes (angiotensin converting enzyme, ACE) that cause blood pressure to rise. Regular consumption of yogurt containing this active peptide can prevent high blood pressure.

5. Probiotics can prevent vaginal infections: Many probiotics can acidify the urogenital tract. It can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria by lowering the pH. It can also contain harmful bacteria by competing with them for space and resources.

6. Probiotics can relieve allergies: Allergy is an immune disease, which is a condition in which the human body's immune function is imbalanced. People with allergies develop allergic symptoms when foreign substances or organisms stimulate the immune system to produce excessive amounts of immunoglobulin (IgE), causing it to release a substance called histamine. Probiotic therapy is one of the effective methods for auxiliary treatment of allergies currently popular both at home and abroad. Probiotics can be used to regulate immunoglobulin (IgE) antibodies in the body to achieve immunotherapy to relieve allergies.

Probiotic therapy fully applies the effects of probiotics and their various benefits to human health to the medical field. It is widely used in the medical field. It can not only prevent cancer, inhibit tumors, and prevent high blood pressure, but also enhance our immune system, relieve allergies, and so on. I believe that probiotic therapy will become more and more perfect in the future and will receive more attention in medicine.
