It is difficult to eliminate by brushing the teeth or rinsing the mouth, and it is difficult to cover up by chewing gum or using detergents. It is a stench that comes from within. The main cause of bad breath is due to improper diet, excessive consumption of spicy food, excessive work and other unhealthy lifestyles that lead to spleen failure and weakened gastrointestinal function, which prevents food from being digested normally in the intestines. A large amount of food waste cannot be excreted from the body, and accumulates more and more, forming toxins that enter the intestinal wall and blood, thereby damaging the internal organs and causing various diseases. Over time, the food waste deposited in the intestines will accumulate and generate heat, produce odor, evaporate upward, and form bad breath through the mouth and nasopharynx. Therefore, to cure bad breath you must first clear the toxins in the intestinal walls and blood in the internal organs, restore the stomach and intestines to normal, and allow food waste deposited in the intestines to be excreted from the body, eradicating the first link in the formation of bad breath, thereby curing bad breath and restoring health.

*TCM prescription for treating bad breath* TCM believes that the principle of treating bad breath is to clear the heat from the lungs and stomach and moisten the dryness from the large intestine.

The proven recipe is bamboo leaf and gypsum soup: 30 grams each of raw gypsum and reed root, 12 grams each of raw rehmannia and honeysuckle, 9 grams each of bamboo leaves, ophiopogon, fennel, forsythia, and platycodon, 3 grams of licorice, boil five and a half bowls of water to get one bowl of warm drink. During the medication period, eat less shrimp, crab, bamboo shoots, eggs, peanuts and other easily-inflammed foods and other greasy and difficult-to-digest foods. If the gastrointestinal dryness and heat are severe, and the abdomen is bloated, you can use Ma Zi Ren Wan plus loquat leaf lung-clearing soup: 30 grams of hemp seed, 9 grams each of loquat leaf, mulberry bark, phellodendron, immature bitter orange, Magnolia officinalis, white peony root, northern apricot, Anemarrhena asphodeloides, and Ophiopogon japonicus, 6 grams of rhubarb (added later), 4.5 grams each of Coptis chinensis and licorice, boil six bowls of water to take one bowl of warm water. For severe constipation, add 4.5 grams of senna leaves to enhance the laxative effect. For those with fishy breath caused by chronic rhinitis or sinusitis: 9-12 grams each of magnolia flower, Xanthium sibiricum fruit, perilla leaf, immature bitter orange, Magnolia officinalis, and Houttuynia cordata, 4.5 grams each of licorice and mint leaves (added later), decocted in water and taken orally. Diet therapy: Use 9 grams each of honeysuckle, artemisia capillaris, and Achyranthes bidentata, 4.5 grams of perilla leaves, an egg, and a little rock sugar. Boil them in sugar water for consumption, or chew the tea leaves. It also has a certain effect on removing bad breath.

If you have a bitter taste in your mouth and bad breath, you must find the root cause of the disease. Only by eliminating the root cause can you truly reduce bad breath. As for the bitter taste in your mouth, you also need to pay attention to keeping your oral cavity clean at all times. Only when your oral cavity is clean can you effectively reduce bad breath.
