What are the hazards of excessive manganese to the human body

I believe that many of my friends don’t know much about manganese! Manganese is one of the essential trace elements for our human body. If the body lacks manganese, it will not only affect fertility, but also increase the incidence of fetal malformations. In addition, the lack of manganese also has a great impact on our bone growth. So what are the hazards of excessive manganese to the human body? Let’s find out together!

Manganese acts selectively on the thalamus, striatum, globus pallidus, substantia nigra, cerebral cortex and other brain areas. After animals are exposed to manganese, the manganese content in the hypothalamus and striatum can increase by about 5 times, and in other brain regions it can increase by about 1 to 2 times. In the striatum, thalamus, and midbrain, there was a decrease in dopamine, an increase in homovanillic acid, an increase in the activities of Na-K-ATPase and cholesterase, an alteration in the activity of Mg-ATPase, and a decrease in the activity of monoamine oxidase.

Pathological changes include nerve cell degeneration and demyelination of nerve fibers, local blood vessel congestion, wall thickening, thrombosis, surrounding tissue edema and lymphocyte infiltration. Vascular lesions further aggravate the damage to nerve cells and nerve fibers. Severe manganese poisoning can cause degeneration of renal tubular epithelial cells, fatty degeneration of the liver, edema and degeneration of the myocardium and muscle fibers, and adrenal ischemia and partial necrosis.

Excessive manganese will affect the human central nervous system, and excessive intake will affect intelligence and reproductive function. If the manganese content in the water exceeds the standard, it is best to boil the water before drinking it. The harm of drinking water quality parameters that exceed the standard for a long time to the human body is the permanganate index, which is an important indicator for measuring organic matter in water. If the index is too high, it will cause digestive tract diseases and even liver cancer.

Through the above introduction, we all know that various trace elements in the body must reach a balanced state to maintain the normal functioning of the body, and manganese is no exception. Excessive manganese can have many negative effects on our reproduction and intelligence, and can also lead to digestive tract diseases. In severe cases, it can cause liver lesions and cancer.
